What are good plants to keep in a window box (indoor) in an apartment building?

We are not allowed to hang them outside the ledge, but there is lots of room on a wide inside window sill to have one in each window. I have no idea of what would be good choices though or what pottting soil to use, etc. I've been told I have a black thumb, but I'd like to give it a go.
